in case some of you aren't aware of just how fucking stupid this is: RICO, which stands for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, was literally created to target the fucking mob. this is the same law Trump and his associates were recently indicted under in Georgia as well. they are literally targeting protesters with a law made to take down the actual fucking mafia
these two cases really demonstrate the danger of expanding state power. it’s great that rico is helping to nail trump & co, but by broadening the definition of who is a valid target for rico cases there’s nothing preventing the state from using it to go after protestors or anyone else it doesn’t like.
Reading through the indictment, it looks like they are describing "Defend the Atlanta Forest" as a criminal organization (the "enterprise" in this racketeering indictment). They are trying to claim that a lot of legal related to the protest of Cop City is part of a criminal conspiracy because there is supposedly a core criminal group recruiting and calling for action. Things like receiving money/reimbursements for food, or driving to a protest with camping gear in the car are listed as acts in furtherance of the conspiracy.
The indictment offers some very bad definitions of anarchism, mutual aid, collectivism and solidarity and cites them as recruitment techniques and ideological underpinnings of "Defend the Atlanta Forest."
I'm not well versed in laws at all, but I think its like claiming any autonomous antifascist action, from actually punching a nazi to handing out flyers to raise awareness, are part of a criminal conspiracy because it was reported on It's Going Down. (Antifa was explicitly referenced in the indictment and identified incorrectly as an organization, btw).
